The vibrant dancheong of the main temple, showcasing intricate paintings, vivid colors, and a striking dragon head detail.<\/p>\n

Haedong Yonggungsa<\/b> (\ud574\ub3d9\uc6a9\uad81\uc0ac, Hanja \u6d77\u6771\u9f8d\u5bae\u5bfa<\/b>) stands strikingly on the seaside cliffs of Gijang-gun<\/b> (\uae30\uc7a5\uad70), Busan<\/b> (\ubd80\uc0b0), making it one of the rare Korean Buddhist temples built along the coast. According to legend, the monk Naong Hyegeun<\/b> (\ub098\uc639 \ud61c\uadfc, 1320\u20131376) dreamed that the Sea God of the East<\/b> would bring rain if a temple were constructed atop Mount Bongnae<\/b> (\ubd09\ub798\uc0b0). In response, Bomun Temple<\/b> (\ubcf4\ubb38\uc0ac) was established in 1376<\/b> but was later destroyed during the Imjin War<\/b> of 1592. The site was revived in the 1930s<\/b> by the monk Ungang<\/b> (\uc6b4\uac15), who renamed it Haedong Yonggungsa<\/b>. The temple complex, anchored by its Daeungjeon Main Hall<\/b> (\ub300\uc6c5\uc804) completed in 2005<\/b>, now venerates Haesu Gwaneum Daebul<\/b> (\ud574\uc218\uad00\uc74c\ub300\ubd88), the Sea-Water Bodhisattva of Compassion<\/b>.<\/p>\n

A hallmark of Haedong Yonggungsa<\/b> is its dancheong<\/b> (\ub2e8\uccad)\u2014the traditional Korean decorative painting applied to wooden structures using five symbolic colors (blue<\/b>, red<\/b>, white<\/b>, black<\/b>, and yellow<\/b>), intended both to embellish and to shield from the elements and insects. Throughout the Daeungjeon<\/b>, visitors can find numerous dragon-head carvings<\/b> (\uc6a9\ub450, yongdu<\/b>) adorning beam ends and roof eaves, their manes and scales highlighted with layers of mineral pigments<\/b> and gilded accents<\/b>.<\/p>\n
