One of the giants of the Uruguayan coast, the southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina), is an uncommon but impressive visitor to the Punta del Este region. Unlike the sea lions (otarids) that gather in port areas, the elephant seal is a species that prefers the tranquility of islands, such as Isla de Lobos. Often seen resting on the shore, the animal in the picture may be a female, as they are significantly smaller than males and lack the distinctive, large inflatable proboscis or "trunk." The other individuals visible in the scene are otarids (sea lions).<\/p>\n
