While American Oystercatchers may appear to lack sexual dimorphism at a glance, you can tell the sexes apart by looking closely at their eyes. Females have small, pigmented spots\u2014or flecks\u2014that stand out against their bright yellow irises. This is because of extra black pigment, and while not all females have them, they are a reliable indicator of sex for many individuals.<\/p>\n
