{"id":36808,"date":"2025-11-19T10:31:41","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T13:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8012\/GabrielPaladino.com\/2025\/11\/19\/a-thousand-invitations\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T10:31:41","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T13:31:41","slug":"a-thousand-invitations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/pelecyphora.ddns.net:60123\/GabrielPaladino.com\/2025\/11\/19\/a-thousand-invitations\/","title":{"rendered":"A Thousand Invitations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/54932996392_a33cf5af89_k.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Gotokuji Temple, located in the Setagaya ward of Tokyo, is believed to be the birthplace of the famous maneki-neko, the \u201cbeckoning cat\u201d figurine that symbolizes good luck.<\/p>\n<p>These statues, depicting a seated cat raising one paw, have become beloved worldwide among cat enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>While maneki-neko come in various styles\u2014raising either the right or left paw\u2014Gotokuji Temple is known for the version with the right paw raised, a sign of prosperity.<\/p>\n<p>According to legend, in the early 17th century, Ii Naotaka, the second lord of the Omi-Hikone Domain, took shelter from a sudden storm after being beckoned into the temple by a resident cat. In gratitude, Naotaka dedicated the temple to his clan. After his death, the temple was renamed Gotokuji, derived from his posthumous Buddhist name.<\/p>\n<p>The cat that saved him was later enshrined as the \u201cFortune-Inviting Kannon.\u201d Over time, it became associated with good luck and was called maneki-neko.
