Haedong Yonggungsa (\ud574\ub3d9 \uc6a9\uad81\uc0ac) is a Buddhist temple situated on the eastern coast of Busan, founded in 1376 during the Goryeo Dynasty (\uace0\ub824). Its direct placement on rocky formations facing the ocean distinguishes it within Korean temple architecture, which traditionally develops in mountainous environments.<\/p>\n

The structures of the complex showcase the dancheong (\ub2e8\uccad) system, a traditional polychrome painting technique applied to eaves, beams, and supporting pillars. Through geometric and floral patterns in a palette of greens, blues, reds, and ochres, this system serves a dual purpose: it acts as a protective barrier for the wood against the marine climate and constitutes a symbolic representation of Buddhist cosmological principles.<\/p>\n

During Seokga Tansinil (\uc11d\uac00\ud0c4\uc2e0\uc77c), the birth of Buddha, the architectural space integrates with ritual practice through the use of paper lanterns known as yeondeung (\uc5f0\ub4f1). From these hang rectangular strips of paper with handwritten inscriptions; on them, the faithful record prayers and names that function as temporary offerings, linking active spirituality with the temple’s materiality.<\/p>\n
