Lacking a central landing platform, the plant presents a dense arrangement of elongated, bright red stamens. To reach the pollen and nectar, a honeybee (Apis mellifera) must squeeze directly through this forest of filaments.

As the bee maneuvers between the tightly packed structures, pollen grains attach to her body, which she gradually sweeps into the corbiculae (pollen baskets) on her hind legs. In the process, she transfers pollen between different filaments, facilitating pollination for the plant. Unlike the straightforward landing on open blossoms, this is a more demanding approach — yet an efficient, functional one, where the insect secures resource-rich pollen while fulfilling the plant’s reproductive cycle.

Armenoi, Crete, Greece

Camera: Canon EOS R7

Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

Capture Information:
Focal Length: 100.0 mm
Shutter Speed: 1/1250
Aperture: f/4.0
ISO: 200

Photo Taken: May 12, 2026
High resolution
Flickr Gallery

Navigating a Callistemon (bottlebrush) inflorescence requires a different strategy than visiting a flat-petaled flower.
