The dark water reflects strong wind and current dynamics typical of this interoceanic passage, known for its rich benthic biodiversity. The city of Ushuaia appears as a narrow strip of human settlement on an alluvial fan, constrained between sea and slopes. Above the urban area, clear bioclimatic zonation is visible: a dense Magellanic subpolar forest dominated by Nothofagus species (lenga and ñire)—whose autumn foliage turns reddish—transitions into barren rock and snow-capped ridges shaped by mechanical weathering and glacial cirques. Although these peaks rarely exceed 1,500 meters, their rise directly from sea level at 54°S gives them an imposing presence under a shifting sky, illustrating the narrow habitable margin of this cold, oceanic climate.

Camera: Canon EOS 750D / Rebel T6i / Kiss X8i

Lens: TAMRON SP 28-75mm F/2.8 Di A09E

Capture Information:
Focal Length: 37.0 mm
Shutter Speed: 1/640
Aperture: f/10.0
ISO: 400

Photo Taken: April 20, 2022
High resolution
Flickr Gallery

A precise cross-section of southernmost South America unfolds across the Beagle Channel, where the Fuegian Andes—oriented west-to-east—rise abruptly from a glacial marine basin.
