A bronze King Leonidas I of Sparta stands atop the monument at Thermopylae, spear leveled and shield bearing a gorgon’s face, guarding the pass where he and his men made their last stand against the Persian army in 480 BC. The site lies in Central Greece, near Lamia, along the old road linking Athens to the north.<\/p>\n

Cut into the stone below him is the phrase "\u039c\u03bf\u03bb\u1f7c\u03bd \u039b\u03b1\u03b2\u03ad" \u2014 "Come and take them." Plutarch records this as Leonidas’s answer when Xerxes demanded the Spartans lay down their arms. No speech, no negotiation \u2014 just two words, and an army that meant to keep them.<\/p>\n

On either side of the wall lie two marble figures, reclining rather than standing: personifications of Mount Taygetos and the Eurotas River, the mountain and river that define Sparta’s homeland. Instead of flanking their king with more warriors, the sculptor placed the land itself beside him \u2014 reminding visitors that Leonidas didn’t just defend a city, but the earth it stood on.<\/p>\n

Together, the three figures form a single idea: a king, his word, and the ground he refused to give up.<\/p>\n
