The Plumbeous Rail (Pardirallus sanguinolentus) is a mid-sized rallid found across much of South America, from southern Ecuador south to Tierra del Fuego, making it the southernmost-ranging rail on the continent. It inhabits marshes, reedbeds, and the edges of lagoons and wetlands, foraging both within dense vegetation and, at times, in the open. Adults show a piercing red eye and coral-red legs, a chestnut-brown back, and slate-grey underparts. The bill is greenish, typically with a blue base to the upper mandible and a red base to the lower mandible, though populations in southern Patagonia (sometimes treated as the subspecies luridus) tend to show duller, less contrasting bill coloration. The species is generally more often heard than seen, favoring dense cover, though individuals will readily walk out onto open mudflats or shallow water to feed.<\/p>\n
